May Shows at Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center

Group of people sitting in theater watching a play onstageLocated in downtown Orlando, no one can dispute that the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is the hub for Orlando’s arts community. It attracts a variety of talent and entertainment monthly and has since it opened in 2014. Inside the impressive structure are well engineered amplified hall, a black box theater, and an acoustic hall (opening soon). The historic Bob Carr Theater one mile away, which has hosted iconic performers since 1927, is also part of the Dr. Phillips Center. Here’s a look at all the performances at the Dr. Phillips Center this May.

A Bronx Tale

April 28 – May 3

Walt Disney Theater

Hailed as “The kind of tale that makes you laugh and cry,” by The New York Times, A Bronx Tale promises a memorable night out at the theater. The musical is based on Chazz Palminteri’s story and follows Calogero, a teenager in the Bronx in the 1960s, as he is caught between the world of his father and the neighborhood mobster. A Bronx Tale features energetic dance numbers and catchy tunes by Alan Menken and is directed by Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks. Tickets go on sale March 13.

Djavan

May 3

Bob Carr Theater

After a 10 year hiatus, Djavan, an award winning Brazilian singer-songwriter, is once again performing in Orlando. His new show, Vesuvio, will feature songs from his 24th studio album, as well as older hits including “Se”, “Flor de Lis,” and “Samurai”. Don’t miss out on your chance to be part of Djavan’s return to the US. Tickets for this performance are currently on sale.

Mowgli – The Jungle Book

May 8 – 10

Kids (and kids at heart) won’t want to miss Orlando Ballet’s Mowgli – The Jungle Book. This exciting ballet immerses you in Mowgli’s wild and beautiful world with award-winning sets and colorful costumes designed by Jonna Hayden. If you plan on bringing young children to the show, Orlando Ballet is offering a show for families on May 9 that features a one hour version of the production. The Ballet Collection

May 16

Bob Carr Theater

The Ballet Collection will feature works by some of the area’s most talented dancers and choreographers. Pieces include everything from lighthearted romance to smooth jazz, with a special focus on classic Shakespearean tragedies such as Romeo & Juliet and MacBeth. It’s your chance to watch some of Orlando’s most talented dancers including Chaiaki Yasukawa (formerly with Orlando Ballet) and United Ballet Theatre’s artistic director Joseph Gatti. Tickets are on sale now.

Universal Funk Orchestra

May 18

Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater

UFO is more than a concert – it’s an experience. As a collective of diverse musicians, UFO features an impressive lineup of talented musicians, curated by DJ Dizzlephunk. Making up UFO’s unique sound that spans several genres are Lyricist Jawaan LaRue (Conscious Mind Records and collaborations with APlus from Souls of Mischief and Hieroglyphics), saxophonist Joe Capati (The 502’s, Nightwinds), drummer Chris LeBrane (Family Gang, The Aristocracy, Kaleigh Baker and NEM), and guitarist The Jester (Tears of a Tyrant, Jester Royale, Family Gang). Tickets for this exciting show are currently on sale via the Dr. Phillips Center website.

Miles & More

May 21-23

Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater

Although only three years old, The Jazz Orchestra at Dr. Phillips Center has had sold-out performances every season. Led by Rodney Whitaker, an internationally-acclaimed bassist, the orchestra will perform special renditions of Miles Davis’ iconic music. Tickets will be available soon on the Dr. Phillips Center website, so bookmark it so you don’t miss out on your chance to be part of this special performance.

My Fair Lady

May 26 – 31

Walt Disney Theater

Wouldn’t it be loverly to watch a live performance of My Fair Lady? You can do so right here in Orlando, as FAIRWINDS Broadway brings this production to the Dr. Phillips Center. Directed by Bartlett Sher, this classic tale tells the story of the transformation of self-absorbed linguistics professor Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower seller. Tickets go on sale April 24 on the Dr. Phillips Center’s website.
