Journey Freedom Tour 2022 With Special Guest Toto at Amway

Amway Center April Concerts Journey Toto

Coming this spring to the Amway Center is the legendary rock band Journey with special guest Toto for the Journey Freedom Tour 2022.

Over the years, Journey’s band members have changed, yet they have had many successes. Here we take a deep dive into the band’s history and music career.

How It Began

The band started in San Francisco in 1973 by a guy named Herbie Herbert who was previously the manager of the band Santana.

Surprisingly, Journey was originally called the Golden Gate Rhythm Section. Their primary goal was to support other Bay Area artists as a backup group. The band’s members at the time were Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, George Tickner, Frumious Bandersnatch, and Prairie Prince. After performing in Hawaii, the band decided to drop the backup group idea and created their own jazz/rock-inspired music. The band ended up changing their name to Journey after an unsuccessful radio contest.

Winterland Ballroom on New Year’s Eve in 1973 was the band’s first public appearance which actually lined them up to secure a recording contract.

In 1975, Journey released their debut album titled Journey which hit number 138 on the Billboard charts. Then in 1976, the band released their next album Look into the Future, which ended up hitting number 100 on the Billboard Top 200 charts. Their third album Next hit number 85 on the Billboard 200, but its sales didn’t do well.

Changing for the Better

Since the sales of the third album didn’t do well, Columbia Records suggested their band add a frontman.

Quickly, the band hired Robert Fleischman, but things didn’t work out and they ended up hiring Steve Perry as their new lead singer. Also, the producer Roy Thomas Baker was hired to change the sound of the band. Thanks to the help of the new lead singer and producer, the band’s fourth album Infinity hit number 21 on Billboard. In 1979, Journey released their fifth album Evolution which hit number 20 on Billboard. Finally, they had their first hit single “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.”

In 1982, Journey released their seventh album Escape which became their most successful album hitting number one in the United States.

This album has the popular songs “Who’s Crying Now,” “Still They Ride,” “Open Arms,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Over the years, the band went through ups and downs with band members leaving and joining, but the band still pursued on. In 2007, Arnel Pineda became the lead singer of Journey, and the band went on creating hit albums and touring the world.

Since the formation of Journey in 1973 to the present day, they have had 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, sold almost 100 albums globally, their hit song “Don’t Stop Believin’” has been streamed over one billion times. They are one of a few bands that have been diamond certified.
