30th Annual Zora! Festival of the Arts and Humanities

Avid readers and history buffs visiting Orlando in the winter are in for a treat. Since 1990, Central Floridians have proudly honored author Zora Neale Hurston’s legacy with an annual festival known as the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities. The multi-day event held in historic Eatonville and throughout Orange County celebrates the arts, culture, and education of rural southern African-American life.

Who is Zora Neale Hurston?

Born January 7, 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama, Hurston moved to Eatonville, Florida when she was a young child. At sixteen, Hurston joined a traveling theatrical company, which landed her in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance. While in New York City she received her B.A. at Barnard College, where she conducted research with noted anthropologists. After college, Hurston traveled throughout the Caribbean and the American South, conducting anthropological research as well as gathering inspiration for her literary works. Though a primary voice of the Harlem Renaissance era, her life in Eatonville influenced her writing the most.
